Look at the middle of the tread. If the centre rib is noticeably more worn than the two outer thirds, that tyre has spent its life overinflated, and it is a slow fault rather than a sudden one. Too much pressure makes the tread crown outwards, so the middle of it does all the work and the shoulders barely touch the road at all.
The cost is grip and mileage. A crowned tyre has a smaller contact patch than it should, which shows up in the wet and in braking distances, and it wears out early down the centre while the edges still look nearly new.
