An asymmetric tyre has two different halves. The outer shoulder is built stiff, with large solid blocks to take cornering loads, while the inner half carries the drainage grooves that clear water out from under the car. Which half faces outward is not a preference. It is moulded onto the sidewall as OUTSIDE and INSIDE, and getting it wrong puts the water clearing half where the cornering load goes and the stiff half where the water needs to escape. The tyre still fits, still holds air and still looks entirely normal from three feet away.
That last part is what makes it a night problem. A tyre mounted onto a rim by somebody working quickly in the dark can go on reversed, and nobody notices until it rains. The car will not feel dramatically different on a dry road, so the fault sits there for months and then turns up as a car that goes vague in standing water for no reason anybody can name. Checking takes about two seconds, and it is the same check whether it is two in the afternoon or two in the morning: find the writing on the sidewall and make sure the word facing you says OUTSIDE.

The sidewall says so. Look for the words OUTSIDE and INSIDE moulded into the rubber, sometimes alongside an arrow or the word ROTATION on a different sort of tyre. If a tyre has an outer face marked on it, that face has to be the one you can see with the wheel on the car.
You lose water clearance where you need it and gain stiffness where you do not. On a dry road the difference is small. In heavy rain the tread is no longer arranged to move water out from under the contact patch, so the tyre gives up its grip earlier and with less warning than it ought to.
Not reliably, which is exactly why it goes unnoticed. Dry grip is barely affected, the car does not pull to one side and there is no noise to speak of. The first real evidence tends to be a wet road at speed and a car that feels less settled than the driver remembers it being.
