When a garage tells you a tyre can be fitted the same day, it usually means the same day if you drive to the centre, the tyre is in stock and the diary has a gap. That is three conditions you cannot control, and the first one is awkward when the tyre is the reason you should not be driving. We remove two of them: the fitter comes to the car, and nobody is waiting in a queue of booked appointments ahead of you. The only thing left to settle is the tyre itself, and we settle that on the phone before anyone moves.

From your call to a tyre fitted today

Everything about getting a tyre fitted the same day hangs on knowing early whether the right tyre is to hand, so that is where the call starts:

• Read us the size or the registration. The size is the line on the sidewall that looks like 205/55 R16 91V; if you cannot see it, the registration lets us look up what the car takes.
• We match it to stock. If it is on the van, the fitter heads straight to you. If it is not, we source it first and give you an arrival time that already includes the collection.
• Tell us where the car is. A driveway, a street, a workplace or a supermarket car park are all fine. Fitting takes about 20 to 30 minutes on site once the fitter is with the car.
• Fitted, balanced and paid for at the car. Wheel nuts torqued, pressures set, old tyre loaded onto the van, and you pay by card or contactless before the fitter leaves.

How we get the right tyre to you the same day

The van carries the sizes that come up again and again on London roads: the everyday fitments on hatchbacks, family cars, SUVs and vans. For those, the tyre is already with the fitter, and the time it takes is mostly the drive to you.

Anything outside that range is sourced from our suppliers before the fitter sets off. That covers most less common sizes, and the arrival time we give you on the call already includes the collection, so you are not left guessing. The tyres that genuinely take longer are the unusual ones: very large diameters, some run-flat tyres, and tyres carrying a car maker's approval mark (a star on many BMWs, MO on Mercedes-Benz, AO on Audi) where you want that exact tyre rather than an equivalent. If yours is one of those, we tell you before you hang up, give you the earliest real time, and say honestly whether the car is fine to use until then.

Already bought the tyre online, or have a new one sitting in the garage? We fit customer-supplied tyres too, and because there is nothing for us to source, that is often the quickest same day job of all. Just check the size on the box matches the size on the car before you call.

Most searches for a tyre shop open now happen at the worst moment: late evening, a Sunday, a bank holiday, when depots are shut or about to close and the ones still open want you to drive there. A mobile fitter turns that round. We are open now, whatever time "now" is, and the shop comes to the car rather than the car limping to the shop.

Same day at a chain versus same day at your car

The big chains do offer same day fitting, but read the conditions. Kwik Fit's express fitting, for example, happens at its centres and depends on stock and diary availability, and online same day orders are generally tied to an ordering cut-off earlier in the day. National, for instance, asks for same day orders to be placed online before 3pm, and the chains' mobile vans work to booked appointment slots, so the earliest one offered is often tomorrow.

None of that is wrong; it suits a planned replacement on a car you can drive. It suits a car with a flat, a bulge or a cord showing much less well. Mobile tyre fitting today, from a fitter who works around the clock, is the difference between "fitted today if you can get here" and "fitted today where the car is". Next day tyre fitting, or a time that suits you

Not every tyre needs to be on the car in the next hour. If the tyre is legal and holding its air but due for replacing, booking ahead is often the better choice: first thing tomorrow before the school run, an evening after work, or the middle of a working day while the car sits in the office car park. Tell us the day, the time and where the car will be, and we hold the slot.

Tyre fitting tomorrow costs exactly the same as fitting today, and so does a weekend morning, so choose the time that fits your day rather than the one you think will be cheaper. If the car has locking wheel nuts, make sure the key will be in the car or agree a handover. Lost the key? We can deal with that on the same visit through locking wheel nut removal.

Is the car safe to drive until we arrive?

Three checks answer it. Is there at least 1.6mm of tread across the central three-quarters of the tyre, all the way round? Is the sidewall free of cuts, cords and bulges? Is the tyre holding its pressure? If all three are yes, the car is generally fine to use until the fitting. Below 1.6mm the tyre is illegal, and the penalty is up to £2,500 and three points for each tyre.

If any answer is no, leave the car where it is and we will fit the tyre where it stands. Driving on a flat destroys the casing and can damage the wheel, as our guide on driving on a flat tyre explains, and a bulge or cut in the sidewall means the tyre should not be driven on at all. If the damage is a nail or screw in the tread, it may not need a new tyre: a same day puncture repair to BS AU 159 is done at the car in the same visit when the damage is within the repairable area.

One exception: we never work on a live carriageway, a motorway hard shoulder or a slip road. If you stop there, call 999 if you are in danger, or National Highways on 0300 123 5000, and we fit the tyre once the car has been moved off the motorway.
