There is a kind of leak that has nothing to do with the tread and shows up mostly on older alloy wheels. Where the tyre seals against the rim there is a machined surface called the bead seat, and on an alloy that surface oxidises. Aluminium oxide is a fine white powder and it builds up into a crust, and once that crust is thick enough the tyre is no longer sealing against smooth metal. Air escapes in a fine line all the way round, a few pounds a week, with absolutely nothing to find in the tread.
People chase these for months. They get sprayed with soapy water, they get inspected by eye, and nothing shows because the leak is under the tyre. The fix is straightforward once you know: the tyre comes off, the seat is cleaned back to clean metal, sealant is applied where appropriate, and the tyre is reseated. It is a job we do at any hour and it usually ends a problem somebody has been living with for a season.
