A fair number of the tyres we take off at night already have somebody else's repair in them, and the interesting question is what kind. A proper repair looks like a neat round patch bonded to the inner liner with a stem filling the channel, and you can see it clearly once the tyre is off the rim. What we find more often is a sticky string pushed in from the outside, which shows on the inside as a frayed tail hanging into the tyre and nothing else.
A string is not a repair. Nobody inspected the casing when it went in, so nobody knows whether the object broke cords on its way through, and the string itself does nothing to seal the liner. Sometimes there is enough sound material around it to remove the string and put a proper repair in its place. Sometimes the channel has been enlarged too much and it is a replacement.
