The thing that destroys a flat tyre is not the road, it is the tyre. Once the pressure has gone the sidewalls fold against themselves as the wheel turns, rubber rubs on rubber several times a second, and the heat that generates has nowhere to go. The inner liner, the soft airtight layer, is the first thing to fail. It scuffs, then it tears, then it starts shedding into the inside of the casing.
