A tyre that lets go at speed does not simply deflate. The tread belt tears away in a strip, stays attached at one end and keeps travelling at road speed, and for a second or two it beats the inside of the wheel arch. Speed decides how much of the car a failure takes with it. A tyre that gives up on a residential street off Sutton High Street loses its air and stops there. Usually, where it has torn at the clips rather than through the middle. A ragged edge gets cut back so it clears the tyre and the rest goes back on its fixings. If it is in pieces it comes off altogether.
It can. The sensor bolts to the valve inside the rim, and a tyre coming apart while the wheel is still turning sometimes shears the stem. We look at it with the tyre off and say what we find.
The tread is a belt of steel and rubber wrapped around the casing. With no air holding the shape, the belt separates from the carcass wherever it failed first and then peels. The peeled length stays attached and goes round with the wheel.
