There is a line of characters moulded into the side of every tyre and it is the entire specification of the thing. Something like 225/45 R17 94W. The 225 is the section width in millimetres. The 45 is the profile, the height of the wall expressed as a percentage of that width. The R17 is the rim diameter in inches. Then comes 94, which is the load index, and W, which is the speed rating, and those last two are the ones treated as suggestions.
They are not suggestions. The load index is the weight a single tyre is certified to carry, and the figure your car was built around assumes it fully loaded rather than empty with one person aboard. Go below it and the casing is working outside what it was ever tested for. The speed rating is about sustained heat as much as outright pace, and a lower rated tyre worked hard on a warm day builds temperature the construction was not designed to shed. It carries an insurance consequence nobody wants to discover afterwards. So we ask for the whole line when you call, not just the first three numbers.
