Mobile locking wheel nut removal across the M25 Corridor

On a driveway in Barnet or Southgate that is an annoyance and nothing more. On the ring road it is a genuine problem, because none of the work can happen where the car has stopped. If you are on the M25 the order is the same as for any other tyre failure: hazards on, a call to 999 or to National Highways on 0300 123 5000, everyone out of the doors away from the traffic and well behind the barrier, and nothing touched until they have made the scene safe. The nut comes off wherever the car is taken afterwards: the services, a slip road, a car park near J24, or your own address once it has been recovered.

We carry the extraction kit that the job actually needs, including thin walled sockets for deep recesses in aftermarket wheels. The nut comes off, the tyre gets changed in the same visit, and an ordinary nut goes back in its place so that the next person to lift that wheel is not stuck in the same way.

If you are on the motorway right now

Leave at the next exit if the car still moves safely. If it does not, ring 999, or National Highways on 0300 123 5000, before you ring us. On a smart motorway there is often no hard shoulder, only emergency areas, and only they can close a lane. Get everyone out through the nearside doors and behind the barrier, and do not sit in the car. We are not permitted to work on a live carriageway or a hard shoulder and we will not pretend otherwise. We come to you once you are at a service area, on a slip road, at the next junction, in a lay-by off the carriageway, or at home after recovery.

Local knowledge across the M25 Corridor

A locking wheel nut is a slow annoyance at home in Barnet or Southgate and a genuine problem on the ring road, because it stops the recovery driver just as surely as it stops you. Nothing is done on a live carriageway, so the sequence there is 999, everyone behind the barrier, and the car moved before anything else. Once it is somewhere safe, taking the nut off is quick work and the wheel change follows straight on from it.

Locking Wheel Nut Removal call-outs we handle in the M25 Corridor

The key that stayed in Barnet

The car was out for the day and the key was in a kitchen drawer at home, so nobody could get the wheel off. We removed the locking nut where the car stood, changed the tyre and left an ordinary nut in its place so that it cannot happen twice.

Southgate, and the recovery driver stuck too

Recovery arrived, found a locking nut with no key anywhere in the car and could do nothing at all with it, because a truck does not carry extraction sockets. That is the usual sequence. We took the nut off in a few minutes and changed the wheel there.

Nobody could move the car at J24

A wheel had to come off and the key had rounded in its socket months earlier without anybody noticing. The car came off the ring on a truck first, because none of this work happens on a live carriageway, and the nut was extracted in a car park.

Locking Wheel Nut Removal in the M25 Corridor, FAQs

Because the kit on a recovery truck stops at a jack and a brace. Neither is any use against a nut that will not take a socket, so the driver's only remaining option is to load the whole car and take it somewhere else. We carry the kit that removes the nut itself, which usually turns a tow into a wheel change on the spot.

Not really, and it is a very common call. Fetching the key is often slower than removing the nut, and we would rather get the car moving. We extract it, change the tyre and put a standard nut back on that stud, so whether you want a locking set again afterwards becomes a decision for another day rather than one made in a car park.

Much worse, because none of this work can happen on a live carriageway. On a driveway it is a slow job and nothing more. On the ring it means a 999 call, everybody standing well behind the barrier, and the car being taken off the road before anybody so much as opens a boot. Only then can the extraction start, wherever it has ended up.

It can. Aftermarket wheels often have deeper nut recesses than the originals, and a socket that fits the nut may not fit down the hole. That is worth mentioning when you ring, along with the make of wheel if you happen to know it, so that we bring the right thin walled sockets rather than finding out at the car.

Usually not. We jack under the car's own jacking point rather than lifting the whole vehicle, and a loaded boot rarely gets in the way of one wheel. If it is a van loaded to the roof over the axle we are working on we may ask you to shift some of it, but we will say so when we see it rather than before.
