There are two ways to move a nut that has corroded onto its stud, and they pull in opposite directions. One is chemistry and patience. A proper penetrating fluid is thin enough to creep into the thread by capillary action, and it needs time sitting there to do it, not a squirt followed immediately by a heave. The other is shock, a sharp impact that cracks the corrosion bond loose without winding the stud up.
Steady brute force is the approach that fails. Lean on a long bar against a seized nut and all of that load goes into twisting the stud, and the stud is the part that cannot be replaced at the roadside. Done properly, the fluid goes on early and gets left alone, the joint is worked back and forth in small movements rather than hauled one way, and shock is applied deliberately and squarely if it is needed at all. Most seized nuts come out like that with nothing broken. The ones that shear are almost always the ones somebody hurried.
Rounded, rusted, over-tightened, or the key is in a drawer somebody moved: the reasons vary and the outcome does not.
