Inside every valve stem there is a small brass core about the size of a match head, held shut by a spring. It is the only thing keeping the air in your tyre between one pressure check and the next, and it is a consumable part, one of the cheapest things on the whole car. It also fails in a very particular way: not with a puncture you can hear, but with a leak so gentle that the tyre is perfectly fine when you park at six in the evening and sitting on the ground at six the next morning.
Three things do it. Grit gets onto the tiny seat inside and stops the core closing fully. The rubber seal in it hardens with age, as rubber does. Or somebody checked the pressures, unscrewed the core slightly without noticing, and left it a quarter turn loose. The dust cap, which nearly everybody treats as decoration, is the second seal that would have covered for all three. The useful part of this at four in the morning is that putting it right takes a couple of minutes, needs no daylight worth speaking of, and the tyre never has to come off the wheel to do it.
