A car that has stood in one spot for a few weeks will often set off feeling as though it has square wheels. That is flat spotting. Where each tyre has been pressed against the road, the rubber and the casing under it have been held deformed the whole time, and in cold weather they take a set. The wheel is still round. The tyre on it is not, at one point in its circumference, and you feel that as a rhythmic thump through the floor and the steering that keeps perfect time with road speed rather than with the engine.
Most of it goes away. As the tyre flexes and warms over the first few miles the rubber returns to shape and the thumping fades out on its own. What does not go away is a flat spot on a tyre that was low on air for the whole time it stood, or on rubber that has hardened with age, because in those cases the set is in the casing rather than in the tread surface. That one is permanent and the tyre has to come off. At three in the morning, with the car having sat since before your last run of shifts, knowing which of the two you have is the whole question, because one you can drive out and the other you cannot.
