Modern car tyres are tubeless, and understanding what that means explains why a proper repair looks the way it does. There is no inner tube. Instead the tyre has a soft, airtight rubber layer bonded to its whole inside surface, called the inner liner, and the air is held between that liner and the wheel. The liner is effectively the tube, spread flat and stuck to the inside of the tyre.
Once you know that, the method makes sense. A repair has to seal the liner, from the inside, exactly as you would patch a tube, and it has to fill the channel through the casing so nothing can travel along it. That is what a combined plug and patch does and it is why the tyre has to come off the rim to fit one. Anything pushed into the hole from the outside is sealing the wrong surface, which is the entire objection to it.
Away from home and a flat overnight is the worst combination, because you have no idea who to ring.
