Sometimes the honest answer at two in the morning is that the tyre could be repaired and should not be. If the tread is down near the wear bars, a repair buys you a few hundred miles and then the tyre is finished anyway, and you have paid for the work twice over. Worse, a tyre near the end of its tread has less rubber between the road and the belts, so an object that would have stopped in the tread on a newer tyre may have gone further into the casing on this one.
So the depth gets measured before the repair is agreed rather than after. If there is plenty of tread, it gets repaired and the conversation ends. If it is nearly done, you get told what it measures and what that means, and the choice is yours rather than ours. What we will not do is charge for a repair on a tyre that is about to need replacing without pointing out that it is about to need replacing.
The morning is what an overnight repair actually buys you. Find a flat at midnight and the choice is a lost day, a taxi and an awkward conversation, or somebody who comes out there and then. We do the third, right across Greater London, 24 hours a day and 365 days a year. From Wimbledon Park to Wimbledon Common, at whatever hour the call lands. The tyre is inspected properly first, repaired to British Standard where it qualifies, rebalanced and pressure-set, and replaced from stock where it does not, so you wake up to a car that works.

A lot of Wimbledon driving is short, congested and stop-start between the Broadway and the Common, which wears tyres quietly and without much warning. If a puncture arrives on a tyre that was already close to the end, the measurement is worth taking before any work is agreed, and it is one of the first things we do on arrival.
Technically fixable and not worth the money, because the tread is nearly gone anyway. Better to know the measurement before agreeing to the work.
Less rubber above the belts means an object goes further in. What would have been a simple tread puncture on a newer tyre can be casing damage on a worn one.
The easy case, and the commonest. Depth measured, damage in the repairable band, combined plug and patch in, wheel rebalanced and back on.
Usually not. You get told the depth and what it means, and you decide. Paying twice within a few months is the outcome worth avoiding.
Every time. It changes the advice, and it also flags anything already past the legal minimum before you drive on it.
1.6mm across the central three quarters of the tread, all the way round. The wear bars in the grooves show you where that is.
24 hours a day, every day of the year, from the Broadway up to the Village and out to Raynes Park. Typical arrival is 30 to 60 minutes.
No. The price quoted before we set off is the price, whatever the hour or the day.
