It depends how deep it goes. Cuts that stay within the rubber are cosmetic. Cuts that reach the steel belts let water in, and rust and separation follow, which is not something you see coming. It needs looking at with the tyre off the rim.
It is tread blocks tearing away in pieces rather than wearing down evenly, usually from repeated running over loose stone. It matters because the blocks left behind lose their support and the pattern stops clearing water properly. A tyre doing it is finished.
Run a hand round the inside and outside of both sidewalls on that corner, feeling for a lump or a soft patch, and check the rim for a flat spot or a bend. Impact damage often takes weeks to show, so look again later in the month.
