Mobile broken tyre replacement across the M25 Corridor
On this side of the ring most of it happens at the edges of the road rather than out on it. The roundabouts and slip roads around J16 where the M40 comes in, the A412 running between Rickmansworth and Watford, and the exit at J19 all take their share of wheels, usually at low speed while the driver is looking at something else. Debris off the running lanes does the rest, and that damage often shows up as a bulge days later rather than a bang at the time.
The honest part is that a good deal of it cannot be repaired. Sidewall and shoulder damage sits outside the repairable area, which is the central three quarters of the tread, and no patch holds where the tyre flexes. If you find it on the motorway, get off the carriageway first, ring 999 or National Highways on 0300 123 5000 before us, and stand behind the barrier. We take the tyre off the rim before anyone decides anything.
Leave at the next exit if the car still moves safely. If it does not, ring 999, or National Highways on 0300 123 5000, before you ring us. On a smart motorway there is often no hard shoulder, only emergency areas, and only they can close a lane. Get everyone out through the nearside doors and behind the barrier, and do not sit in the car. We are not permitted to work on a live carriageway or a hard shoulder and we will not pretend otherwise. We come to you once you are at a service area, on a slip road, at the next junction, in a lay-by off the carriageway, or at home after recovery.

Local knowledge across the M25 Corridor
Broken tyres on the western arc mostly come from the edges of the road rather than the road itself: the roundabouts and slip roads at J16, the A412 between Rickmansworth and Watford, and the exit at J19. Kerb and debris damage is very often invisible from outside, so we take the tyre off the rim and show you the inner face before saying whether it can stay on the car.
Broken Tyre call-outs we handle in the M25 Corridor
A corner clipped at J16
Coming round onto the M40 link the driver caught the kerb with the nearside front. Nothing showed from the pavement side, but off the rim the shoulder was cut through to the cords. It would have held air for weeks and then let go.
Exposed cord under a light scuff
A tyre with a scrape along the sidewall that looked entirely cosmetic. We take those off the rim rather than judge them from outside, and this one had a section of cord showing on the inner face. Scuffed and finished look much the same on a driveway.
Both nearside tyres, one Watford impact
A pothole caught the front wheel and the rear went into it a fraction of a second later. The front was obviously gone. The rear had a bulge starting that would have gone unnoticed for a fortnight, so we replaced the pair and checked both rims.

Broken Tyre in the M25 Corridor, FAQs
By taking it off the rim and looking at the inside. A scuff that has only taken rubber off the outer face is usually sound. One that has cut into the shoulder or lifted the cords shows on the inner liner as a scored or ridged patch. From outside the two look identical, which is why we do not guess at it.
They can, and that is the part you cannot see. A deep gouge will cut or expose the steel belts, and once water reaches them they corrode and the belt starts to separate from the rubber. You feel that later as a vibration rather than a leak. If the cut reaches the belts the tyre is finished, whatever the tread depth.
One kerb or one pothole catches the front wheel, and the rear follows into it a fraction of a second later at the same speed and the same angle. It is a common pattern and it is the reason we look at both wheels on the side that took the hit, not only the one you noticed.
It should, because the tester sees both faces with the car on a lift. The trouble is that a year is a long time and this sort of damage arrives in a moment. Exposed cord, a cut deeper than the tread and a bulge are all failures, so a tyre in that state has usually broken since the last test.
It does. A low profile tyre has very little rubber between the rim and whatever it hits, so a kerb strike pinches the casing against the edge of the wheel and tears it from the inside. The wheel takes more of the blow as well. The same strike on a taller sidewall is often no more than a scuff.
