A front pulls hard towards the failed side and the steering goes heavy, so the work is holding a straight line. A rear feels looser, as though the back of the car is wandering, and that is the one that catches people out. Either way the answer is the same: firm hands, lift off gradually, no braking, let the speed fall away.
Often it can, but not always, and it is not something to judge from the outside. A tyre that has come apart at speed can flatten the rim edge or crack the flange where the bead sits. We take the tyre off and check the seating face before fitting anything new, and if the wheel will not seal reliably we say so.
The two work together. A soft tyre flexes far more than it was built to and the sidewall gets hot, and an older casing has less left in it to resist that heat. Most bursts we look at show one or both. A monthly pressure check with a decent gauge is the single most useful habit for anyone doing regular motorway miles.
Not necessarily. If the car is still on the motorway and will move, driving at walking pace with the hazards on to get clear of the live road is the right call, even though it will finish the wheel. If it will not move, ring 999. Once you are stopped on an ordinary road like the A316, stay there and we will come.
For a couple of miles at low speed, yes, which is exactly what it exists for. It is limited to fifty miles an hour and it is not something to rejoin the motorway on. If it gets you off at junction 1 and into a side road in Feltham where we can work properly, it has done its job and we will fit a full size tyre there.
