Why the M3 Corridor drivers call Fast Tyre

The M3 begins at Sunbury Cross and runs south west from there, and its first two junctions sit on the towns we work in daily. Junction 1 takes A308 and A316 traffic onto the motorway at Sunbury-on-Thames, with Shepperton, Ashford and Feltham minutes from the slip roads. Junction 2 is the M25 interchange out by Chertsey.

Long sections of the M3 are all lane running, with no permanent hard shoulder, only emergency areas spaced along the nearside. That is worth saying plainly, because it changes what you do. If a tyre goes and the car will still move safely, come off at the next exit, hazards on. If it will not, ring 999, or National Highways on 0300 123 5000, before you ring us, then get everyone out through the nearside doors and behind the barrier.

We do not attend a live carriageway or a hard shoulder. We come once you are somewhere we can legally and safely work: a service area, a slip road, the next junction, a lay-by clear of the carriageway, or your home or work after recovery. Typically 30 to 60 minutes across London and the nearer Home Counties, longer at the far end of the corridor, with a real time given on the call.

This is a short, fast piece of motorway wrapped in slow local roads. The A308 and the A316 feed junction 1 from Sunbury and Feltham, the A320 and the A317 bring Chertsey traffic round towards junction 2, and the A244 and the A314 fill in between Shepperton and Ashford. Most damage we see on the corridor was picked up on those roads rather than on the motorway itself, then only announced itself once the car got up to speed. Add Heathrow freight through Feltham and the A312, and the tyres out here work harder than the mileage suggests.

• Budget and mid-range tyres. There is nothing wrong with a budget tyre fitted properly. We will tell you honestly which axle is worth spending on rather than selling you four premiums.
• Van and light commercial. Van tyres carry a C rating and a higher load index. Fitting a car tyre to a loaded van is both unsafe and an insurance problem, so we match the correct rating.
