Puncture Repair in the M3 Corridor

Whether a puncture can be repaired is decided by two things: where the damage sits, and how far the car travelled after it happened.

The rules are not ours. A repair has to meet British Standard BS AU 159, which is what the DVSA expects to see, and that confines it to the central three quarters of the tread. Anything in the shoulder or the sidewall flexes on every rotation and will not hold a patch. It also has to be done properly: the tyre off the rim, the inside inspected, the injury plugged and patched from within. A plug pushed in from the outside is not a repair.

The ones we do save tend to come off ordinary roads rather than the motorway. A screw lifted around the industrial estates off the A312, a staple out of a delivery yard in Feltham, found the next morning as a soft tyre on the drive. Put air in it, leave the car where it is and ring us. If it goes down on the M3 instead, that is a 999 or National Highways call on 0300 123 5000, and everyone behind the barrier before anybody rings us.

If you are on the motorway right now

Leave at the next exit if the car still moves safely. If it does not, ring 999, or National Highways on 0300 123 5000, before you ring us. On a smart motorway there is often no hard shoulder, only emergency areas, and only they can close a lane. Get everyone out through the nearside doors and behind the barrier, and do not sit in the car. We are not permitted to work on a live carriageway or a hard shoulder and we will not pretend otherwise. We come to you once you are at a service area, on a slip road, at the next junction, in a lay-by off the carriageway, or at home after recovery.

Local knowledge across the M3 Corridor

The M3 is a poor place to pick up a repairable puncture, because there is nowhere to stop for a mile or more and a soft tyre at seventy destroys itself in that distance. The ones we save around here mostly come off the A312 and A314 in Feltham, or the yards and estates near them, and get found the next morning on a driveway. Ring before you drive on it and the odds change completely.

Puncture Repair call-outs we handle in the M3 Corridor

Twelve miles too far past J1

A driver kept going after the warning light rather than leaving at junction 1. By the time the car reached a car park the inner liner had broken up, and a puncture that would have been a twenty minute repair had turned into a new tyre.

The A312 job we turned down

A nail had gone in where the tread block meets the sidewall. It was holding air and would have gone on doing so for a while, but a patch there works loose in service and the standard does not permit it. We fitted a replacement and showed the owner why.

Valve perished on an Ashford driveway

Three psi a week disappearing with nothing at all visible in the tread. Off the rim, the rubber valve had split at its base. We replaced it, checked the bead seat while the tyre was off, refitted and balanced, and it has held pressure since.

So glad I called when I got a puncture. They kept me posted, arrived in good time and the price was very reasonable. I felt safe and looked after by their excellent service.

I clipped the kerb when parking, damaging the wall of my tyre. I contacted Fast Tyre at 21:37 and by 23:40 I had a new tyre fitted. Excellent service and both boys were friendly and efficient.

5 star without a doubt! Called this morning with a complete flat tyre in N13 and within 30 minutes Abdul arrived and changed it. He also checked all 4 tyres and showed me one was completely bald and dangerous to drive.

Puncture Repair in the M3 Corridor, FAQs

It is speed and distance rather than the nail. On the motorway there is nowhere to stop for a mile or more, and a soft tyre at seventy wrecks its own inner liner in that distance. The same screw picked up at thirty on the A314 in Feltham is usually found on the driveway next morning, and it repairs perfectly well.

It is the airtight rubber skin bonded to the inside of the casing, and it is the surface a patch has to key into. Running a tyre soft lets the sidewalls fold against themselves until the liner tears and powders. Once that has happened there is nothing sound left to bond to, however small the original hole was.

Very. Trade and delivery traffic drops screws, staples and offcuts along that corridor and around the yards off it, and they sit in the road until a tyre lifts one. They go in cleanly and leak slowly, which is the best kind of puncture to get, because it is usually found before the tyre has been ruined.

Probably not the puncture itself. A pull usually comes from pressures being uneven side to side, or from an alignment knock picked up at the same moment as the damage, a kerb or a pothole on the A30. We set both fronts to the same figure when we finish, and if it still pulls the tracking is the next thing to check.

Nothing is lost by that. Leave the wheel where it is or bring it out of the boot, and we will take the tyre off the rim and look at it properly. If the injury is inside the repairable area and the tyre has not been run flat, we repair it, refit it and stow the space saver back under the boot floor.
