Emergency mobile tyre fitting across the M3 Corridor

What it does not cover is the motorway. We do not fit on a live carriageway or a hard shoulder, on the M3 or anywhere else, and no arrangement makes that acceptable. If the car is still on the road, ring 999 or National Highways on 0300 123 5000 first, get everyone behind the barrier, and let them move you somewhere we can legally work. That might be off at junction 1, a proper lay-by on an ordinary road, or your own address after recovery.

In practice most of this corridor's mobile fitting happens in Shepperton, Sunbury-on-Thames, Feltham, Ashford and Chertsey, in exactly the mixture of places you would expect: a works car park off the A312, a residential street off the A244, a quiet lane out towards the reservoirs, a driveway at eleven at night. Tell us what the ground is like when you ring and we arrive ready for it.

If you are on the motorway right now

Leave at the next exit if the car still moves safely. If it does not, ring 999, or National Highways on 0300 123 5000, before you ring us. On a smart motorway there is often no hard shoulder, only emergency areas, and only they can close a lane. Get everyone out through the nearside doors and behind the barrier, and do not sit in the car. We are not permitted to work on a live carriageway or a hard shoulder and we will not pretend otherwise. We come to you once you are at a service area, on a slip road, at the next junction, in a lay-by off the carriageway, or at home after recovery.

Local knowledge across the M3 Corridor

Almost every mobile fit on this corridor happens somewhere completely ordinary: a works car park off the A312, a residential street in Shepperton, a forecourt near junction 1, a driveway in Chertsey after a recovery truck has dropped the car home. What we need is firm level ground and room to stand the van between you and any traffic. Tell us what the surface and the access look like when you ring and we turn up ready for it.

Emergency Mobile Tyre Fitting call-outs we handle in the M3 Corridor

A Shepperton yard, van alongside

The car had been left in a works yard off the A244 with a flat tyre and the keys in an office. We stood the van alongside, worked from the kerb side, fitted and balanced the tyre and set the pressures, and it was ready when the owner came back.

Home in Chertsey after recovery

The car could not be driven off the motorway, so it was recovered once the scene had been made safe and taken to the owner's address in Chertsey. We fitted there the same evening, checked the rim for damage and set the pressures on all four before leaving.

Why we moved the car first

The car had stopped somewhere with traffic passing close on the nearside. Rather than work there we asked for it to be rolled thirty yards into a side road, which took two minutes and took the whole job out of the traffic. That is always the better trade.

Emergency Mobile Tyre Fitting in the M3 Corridor, FAQs

Soft ground, loose gravel and a noticeable slope are the three that stop us. The jack needs a firm flat footing under the manufacturer's jacking point, and a car that can settle or roll while it is lifted is not something we will risk. If the surface at a Shepperton address is doubtful, a few yards onto tarmac usually solves it.

If it is a proper lay-by, set back from the running lane with room for the van in front of you, then yes. If it is little more than a widened verge with traffic passing close, we will ask you to move to a side road or a car park instead. We make that call with you on the phone, from what you can see.

Usually, as long as the damaged wheel is on the open side. If it is the wheel against the wall we will ask you to pull forward or reverse out a couple of feet, because we need room to work and to get the tyre off the rim. Sorting that before we arrive is quicker than discovering it in a Chertsey car park.

Yes, and it is worth saying plainly. A narrow verge with traffic close by, a slip road, a live roundabout approach, or anywhere the van cannot shield the working side. None of those are places to kneel beside a wheel. We would rather arrange recovery to a car park or an address than put anybody in the traffic.

Rarely. A recovery truck usually leaves the car on a driveway or a hard standing, which is exactly what we want. The one thing worth checking is that the damaged wheel is not tight against a fence or another car, because we have to get to it from the side. If it is, a few feet is normally enough.
