It does. A bay near the lorry parking or on a through route means we are working with vehicles manoeuvring behind us. A bay at the edge, nose in, with space on the damaged side, is far better. If you can move the car before we arrive, do it while you are waiting rather than while we are unloading.
A slip road is workable when the car is well onto the verge or hard standing, with the damaged wheel on the nearside and room for us to stand clear of anything joining. If the only safe side to work on is the traffic side, we will not start. It is the motorway itself and the hard shoulder that are never an option.
Behind the car and slightly out from it, with beacons on, so it takes the first knock and makes the scene visible from a distance. That is standard on any road with traffic moving past. It also means we need a little more length than the car alone, which is worth mentioning when you describe where you have stopped.
Not on soft ground, no. A jack on a wet verge can sink or tip while the car is up, and that is not a risk worth taking over a tyre. If the car is sitting on grass or mud we will ask for it to be moved onto hard standing, or recovered somewhere level if it cannot move at all.
It changes the detail rather than the job. A battery car is heavier, has specific jacking points that have to be used, and often runs a higher load index than the same shape of petrol car, so we match that rather than the nearest number.
