The 225 is the section width in millimetres. The 45 is the profile, the sidewall height expressed as a percentage of that width, so a lower number means a shorter sidewall and a firmer ride. R17 is the rim diameter in inches. Then come the two characters most people skip over: 94 is the load index and W is the speed symbol.
