There is a line across the face of your tyre that decides whether a puncture costs a little or a lot, and you cannot see it. British Standard BS AU 159 splits the tread into a repairable area and everything else. The repairable area is the central three quarters of the tread width. A nail inside that band, going more or less straight in, is a permanent repair and always has been. The same nail a couple of centimetres further out sits in the shoulder, where the tyre flexes hardest and where a patch gets peeled rather than pressed, and the tyre has to be replaced.
So we measure first and tell you second, rather than the other way round. The tyre comes off the wheel, the object comes out, the position is checked against the band, and the inside of the casing gets looked at. Only then does anybody know which of the two conversations you are having. All of that happens wherever the car is sitting, on the drive, in a car park off the Oxford Road, or at your workplace, which means nothing gets driven on soft in the meantime.
The pressure warning light is not a puncture, it is a question. We come out in UB8, find out which of the four it is, and deal with it: a proper internal repair to BS AU 159 where the tyre allows one, a valve or sensor where that is the fault, or a replacement where the casing has gone. Oxford Road is a delivery route from early morning until late, and the debris that comes with that is why so many Uxbridge punctures turn out to be ordinary screws in the middle of the tread. Because that is the part of the tyre that does the flexing. Every corner and every kerb works the shoulder far harder than the middle of the tread, so a patch bonded out there is being pulled at rather than pressed down. The standard excludes it for good reason.
Roughly, but not accurately enough to promise anything. The measurement that counts is taken with the tyre off the rim, which is also the only way to see what the inside of the casing looks like.
