Next to the size on the sidewall there is sometimes XL, or Extra Load, or Reinforced. They all mean the same thing: a stronger casing designed to carry a higher load at a higher inflation pressure than the standard version of that size. Cars are specified for it deliberately. Heavier estates and SUVs, cars with a lot of weight over one axle, and anything designed to be loaded up will have XL on the placard for a reason, and the load index alongside it is the number that reason is expressed in.
Here is the trap. A standard load tyre in the same size fits the same rim, looks identical from three feet away and gives no clue whatsoever from the driving seat. It is simply rated to carry less than the car asks of it, and it runs at a lower pressure to do so. At half past one in the morning with one tyre to replace and a driver who wants to be home, matching only the size is an easy mistake and an invisible one.
