Easily. A piece of shed tread or a broken bracket does not have to be sharp, because at speed the tyre is pressed down onto it hard enough to cut or pinch the casing. The outside can look almost untouched afterwards. We take the tyre off the wheel and read the inner liner, which is where that kind of damage actually shows itself.
It does similar harm by a different route. A kerb tends to cut or scuff the outer sidewall where you can see it. A pothole traps the tyre between the rim and the far lip of the hole, which snaps cords on the inside and surfaces later as a lump. Both count as impact damage and neither one can be repaired.
If cords are visible, or the cut is deep enough to have reached them, the car is not roadworthy and using it is an offence as well as a risk. A shallow scuff that has taken surface rubber only is a different matter. If you cannot tell which you have, leave the car standing and let us look at it rather than gamble on the difference.
Because that is the side meeting the kerb every time you come round a tight island or tuck into a slip. Repeated small strikes scuff the sidewall and wear the shoulder unevenly, and one of them eventually catches hard enough to break something inside. Turning the wheel while stationary makes it worse, and so does running the pressures low.
Yes, and it is worth asking for. We would normally take the old tyre away for recycling, so say before we start and it stays with you instead. Photograph the tyre, the wheel and the hole itself if you can do that safely, and note the date and the exact spot. That evidence carries far more weight than a description written afterwards.
