Why the tread depth did not matter
A saloon had a soft lump on the inner sidewall with five millimetres of tread left right across the tyre. The tread was never the issue. A bulge means the cords inside have already failed, and the tyre had to come off whatever the depth gauge said.

Usually, yes. Parking damage tends to scuff the sidewall at walking pace with much of the weight off the tyre. Clipping a kerb on a roundabout at thirty puts the full weight of the car through a turned wheel and a compressed sidewall, which is how casings get cut or pinched against the rim. The mark can look similar and the damage is not.
It does. A cut running across the tread crosses the belts and is far more likely to have reached them than one running around the tyre in the direction of travel. Either way we take the tyre off the rim and look at the base of the cut and the inside of the casing before saying whether it stays on the car.
Both wheels on one side pass over the same edge within a fraction of a second, so it is common rather than unlucky. The front usually takes the harder hit because the car is still at full speed, but the rear follows into the same hole with the weight transferring backwards. We check both sides whenever a pothole is mentioned.
The motorway itself is rarely the culprit. Damage overwhelmingly happens where the wheel is turned and loaded at the same time, which means slip roads, roundabouts and the ordinary roads either side of the corridor. What the motorway does is find the weakness afterwards, at seventy, which is why a kerbed tyre is worth looking at the same day.
By where it is and what it looks like. Impact damage leaves a pinch mark in the sidewall or a corresponding mark on the rim. A belt separation with no impact history and no kerb mark is a different conversation, and if the tyre is young enough to be worth raising with the manufacturer we will say so and hand you the evidence.
