Mobile broken tyre replacement across the M40 Corridor

What decides it is where the damage sits, not how big it looks. A repair to British Standard BS AU 159 is only permitted in the central three quarters of the tread. The shoulder and the sidewall flex on every rotation and will not hold a patch, so damage there ends the tyre outright, and an impact break inside the casing does the same even when the outside is unmarked. That is why we take the tyre off the rim and look.

If you find it while you are still moving on the motorway, treat it as a stop rather than a repair. Get off at the next junction if the car will safely do it. If it will not, put the hazards on, get out on the passenger side, put the barrier between you and the traffic, and let 999 or National Highways move you. We fit at the services, on a slip road, in a car park, on a driveway in Uxbridge or Beaconsfield, never on the carriageway itself.

If you are on the motorway right now

Leave at the next exit if the car still moves safely. If it does not, ring 999, or National Highways on 0300 123 5000, before you ring us. On a smart motorway there is often no hard shoulder, only emergency areas, and only they can close a lane. Get everyone out through the nearside doors and behind the barrier, and do not sit in the car. We are not permitted to work on a live carriageway or a hard shoulder and we will not pretend otherwise. We come to you once you are at a service area, on a slip road, at the next junction, in a lay-by off the carriageway, or at home after recovery.

Local knowledge across the M40 Corridor

Broken tyres on this stretch come from two very different places. At the London end it is kerbs, roundabouts and potholes, the A412 and the A4094, damage done at twenty rather than at seventy. West of High Wycombe it is debris thrown out by the lorry traffic on the climb, and that opens sidewalls rather than bruising them. Knowing which of the two we are dealing with tells us what to put on the van before we set off.

A roundabout kerb at Denham

Rushing a gap put the nearside front hard into the kerb face. Nothing at all showed from the pavement, but off the rim there was a clean split in the inner liner where the casing had been pinched. New tyre, and the wheel checked as well.

What the A404 verge threw up

A strip of steel banding, flicked up by the lorry in front, opened the sidewall from shoulder to bead in one go. The driver got clear at the next roundabout and rang from there. Damage like that is never repairable, whatever it looks like.

Only visible off the rim

A second opinion, after a garage had looked at the outside and passed it. There was not a mark on the tread. Inside, a ridge ran right round the casing where the cords had let go after an impact. It would not have seen out the winter.

I would highly recommend Sohit. Got a damaged tyre late night, and contacted him. He responded exceptionally fast and fixed the tyre in a very professional manner at a very reasonable price.

Within an hour Abdul was at my house and it took him 15 minutes to change two tyres. Rapid, polite and with a huge smile. An absolute asset to the company.

Broken Tyre in the M40 Corridor, FAQs

Yes. Give it to the National Highways line, 0300 123 5000, with a rough location and the direction you were travelling, so it gets cleared before it takes somebody else's tyre. Hang on to the damaged one if you intend to speak to an insurer. Do not go back and try to move anything off the road yourself.

No, and that catches people out. The tyre is the part that takes the squeeze, and the casing can be pinched between kerb and rim edge hard enough to break the cords while the wheel comes away without a scratch. You often feel nothing at the time. The evidence is on the inside, which is where we look.

Usually that the tyre has met something sharp at speed, or that the rubber has hardened with age and torn instead of flexing. A shallow scuff is often survivable. Anything deep enough to show the belt underneath, or wide enough to run into the shoulder, is the end of that tyre. We can tell you which once it is off the wheel.

It commonly does. The cords break at the moment of the hit, but the bulge that gives it away needs time and pressure to push its way out through the sidewall. People usually connect it to a pothole from a month earlier. Once that lump is there the tyre is scrap and wants doing before the next long run.

Because it is neither safe nor legal for us, and standing beside a live lane is by far the most dangerous part of the whole business. On a motorway that is a job for the police or National Highways first. Once they have moved you off, to an exit or somewhere properly clear, we get on with it.
