The M40 leaves London at Denham and changes character as it climbs west. The first miles past J1 and J2 are commuter road, Gerrards Cross and Beaconsfield traffic joining and leaving inside the same half mile. Past High Wycombe at J4 the carriageway lifts, and the pull to Stokenchurch at J5 is a long, exposed Chiltern climb with lorries strung across two lanes. A tyre that lets go there leaves you no good options.

If it happens, the order matters. Get off the carriageway if the car will still move safely, hazards on, and take the next exit. Get everyone out through the nearside doors and behind the barrier, and stay there rather than in the car.

The A355 and the A413 bring Beaconsfield and Gerrards Cross traffic down to J1 and J2, the A404 carries Marlow and Maidenhead up to J4, and the A40 shadows the motorway the whole way as the diversion nobody plans for. Once you are off the M40 you are in Chiltern country, where the lanes between Stokenchurch and the Wycombe valley are unlit, narrow and no better place to change a wheel. Bringing the tyre to the car is usually the shortest way out of it.
