Puncture Repair in the M40 Corridor

Whether a puncture can be repaired is settled by two things: where the damage sits, and how far the tyre was driven after the air went. On this road the second one usually decides it.

Mobile puncture repair across the M40 Corridor

The limits are not ours to move. A repair has to meet British Standard BS AU 159, which is what the DVSA expects to see, and that confines it to the central three quarters of the tread. Damage in the shoulder or the sidewall flexes with every rotation and will not hold a patch. A tyre driven flat has a broken up inner liner with nothing sound left to bond to. So we take the tyre off the rim and look inside before anybody is told anything.

The commuter end gives us the other sort. A screw picked up on a site road, found soft on a drive in Gerrards Cross two mornings later, is usually a straightforward repair and no reason at all to buy a tyre. Put air in it and ring us rather than driving on it. If you find out while you are still on the motorway, come off at the next exit, or ring 999 and stand behind the barrier if the car will not move.

If you are on the motorway right now

Leave at the next exit if the car still moves safely. If it does not, ring 999, or National Highways on 0300 123 5000, before you ring us. On a smart motorway there is often no hard shoulder, only emergency areas, and only they can close a lane. Get everyone out through the nearside doors and behind the barrier, and do not sit in the car. We are not permitted to work on a live carriageway or a hard shoulder and we will not pretend otherwise. We come to you once you are at a service area, on a slip road, at the next junction, in a lay-by off the carriageway, or at home after recovery.

Local knowledge across the M40 Corridor

At the Gerrards Cross end most punctures we see are screws and nails picked up locally, found on a drive with the tyre still up, and nearly all of them are repairable. The ones that come off the motorway rarely are, because the tyre kept turning after the air went. Put air in it, ring us, and we will come to the house or the car park, take the tyre off the rim and show you what is actually there before anything is decided.

The A413 screw we could save

A screw picked up on the A413 sat squarely in the middle of the tread and had been spotted before the tyre ran soft. Off the rim, cleaned, plugged and patched from the inside, then balanced and refitted. There was no need for a new tyre at all.

Clean nail, ruined casing

The nail sat in the repairable zone and would have been a simple job on the Monday. By the Friday the tyre had been run soft for four days and the liner had broken up inside, so there was no sound surface for a patch and it needed replacing.

Repaired at a workplace off the A355

A car parked all day at a site off the A355 had been losing air for a fortnight and nobody could place where from. It was a small stone cut in the tread rather than the valve. We repaired it where it stood and the driver collected it after the shift.

I would highly recommend Sohit. Got a damaged tyre late night, and contacted him. He responded exceptionally fast and fixed the tyre in a very professional manner at a very reasonable price.

Puncture Repair in the M40 Corridor, FAQs

The damage is judged the same way, but the history is not. A tyre that went down at speed has usually been run on, even briefly, and running on it is what wrecks the inner liner. One found soft on a driveway in Gerrards Cross has normally lost its air slowly overnight, and is far more likely to be saved.

999 first, or National Highways on 0300 123 5000, and before you ring us. Smart motorway sections have emergency areas rather than a continuous hard shoulder, and only the control room can close a lane and make the scene safe. Everybody should leave by the nearside doors and stand behind the barrier meanwhile. We attend once you are off the carriageway.

Yes. On cars first used from 2012, a tyre pressure monitoring warning that stays lit is an MOT failure, so it is worth sorting rather than living with. Often the light is doing its job and there is a slow puncture behind it. Sometimes the sensor itself has died. We will tell you which of the two you have.

Usually not. The legal minimum is 1.6mm across the central three quarters, but we would be advising a replacement at around 3mm on a car covering that sort of mileage, because wet braking falls away quickly below it. Paying for a repair on a tyre you will change within a few months is money better kept in your pocket.

Sometimes. We take the tyre off the rim, remove whatever has been pushed in, and look at what the object and the plug have done to the liner between them. If the injury is still inside the repairable zone and the casing is sound, it can then be repaired properly. If the plug has worked loose and torn the liner, it cannot.
