Emergency Mobile Tyre Fitting in the A1(M) Corridor
Emergency mobile fitting is really about where the car ended up.

What makes a spot workable is simple enough. The car has to be clear of moving traffic, with room to stand and kneel on the side we are working, ground firm and level enough to jack on, and access for the van somewhere near. A hard shoulder is none of those things, and neither is an emergency area or a live lane, so we do not work in them at any hour or for any customer.
That is also why the signs matter. Where the road reads A1(M) it is a motorway, so ring 999 or National Highways on 0300 123 5000 and get behind the barrier before you ring anyone else. Past Baldock the motorway grade section stops and the A1 continues as a fast dual carriageway. The rules change there, the speed does not, and standing about beside it is no better an idea.
Leave at the next exit if the car still moves safely. If it does not, ring 999, or National Highways on 0300 123 5000, before you ring us. On a smart motorway there is often no hard shoulder, only emergency areas, and only they can close a lane. Get everyone out through the nearside doors and behind the barrier, and do not sit in the car. We are not permitted to work on a live carriageway or a hard shoulder and we will not pretend otherwise. We come to you once you are at a service area, on a slip road, at the next junction, in a lay-by off the carriageway, or at home after recovery.

Local knowledge across the A1(M) Corridor
Knowing this stretch mostly means knowing where a car can actually be worked on. The junction roundabouts have side roads and car parks within a minute or two, the services take the traffic that cannot get that far, and the Baldock end is where the motorway rules stop and the A1 carries on. We fit at any of those, and at a Stevenage or Knebworth address once recovery has taken the car home. What we never do is work beside a running lane.

A car park two minutes from junction 4
The car came off the motorway on a tyre that was already finished and pulled into a retail car park near the roundabout. Flat ground, an empty bay on the nearside and room for the van behind it, which is about as straightforward as these get.
Top of the Stevenage slip
The car had stopped where the slip road widens, well back from the running lane, with the verge behind it. There was room to stand on the nearside and firm ground to jack on, so we worked there with the van placed between the car and the traffic.
The tow was the right call
The only place to stop had traffic going by within arm's reach, so we told the driver on the phone that we would not work there. Recovery took the car to a driveway a few miles off, and the new tyre went on there that evening, balanced and torqued.

Emergency Mobile Tyre Fitting in the A1(M) Corridor, FAQs
It changes what is beside you. On the motorway sections there are no ordinary lay-bys, only emergency areas and a hard shoulder where one exists, and we work in none of them. Where the road is signed A1 there may be a proper lay-by set back from the traffic, and if it is genuinely clear with room to work, that is different.
In practice no, provided we park properly and block nothing. It is a car park like any other, we take up one bay and we are not there long. If a site has its own rules we follow them, and if somebody asks us to move along we move rather than stand there arguing about it.
Off the slip and into the side roads around the roundabout, or one of the car parks a minute or two away. Any of those suit us. What we want to avoid is the car being left on the slip itself with traffic joining behind it, because that is not somewhere anybody should be standing about.
Not while it is passing close. A slip road can be workable when the car sits well back from the running lane with room on the nearside, and often it is nothing like that. Where there is doubt we would rather it was moved or recovered first, and we say so on the phone instead of turning up and refusing.
A few things. We fit, balance and torque at the car, but a buckled or cracked rim needs a wheel specialist, and a hard kerb hit is worth an alignment check afterwards at a garage with the equipment for it. We tell you when that is the case so it does not come as a surprise later.
