The A1(M) is the motorway grade section of the old Great North Road, and through Hertfordshire it runs past Hatfield, Welwyn Garden City, Knebworth, Letchworth Garden City and Baldock. It is easily muddled with the ordinary A1, and the difference matters when a tyre goes: where the road is signed A1(M) it is a motorway, and motorway rules apply to it in full.

First, what we will not do. Fast Tyre does not attend a live carriageway or a hard shoulder on this road, and nobody should tell you to sit there and wait for a van. Come off at the next junction if the car will still move safely, hazards on. If it will not, ring 999, or National Highways on 0300 123 5000, before you ring us. Get everyone out through the nearside doors and behind the barrier, and stay behind it. Only they can close a lane.

We pick the job up once you are somewhere we can legally and safely work: the services, a slip road, a lay-by off the carriageway, a car park in Hatfield or Baldock, or your own drive after recovery. Typically 30 to 60 minutes across London and the nearer Home Counties, longer towards the northern end of the corridor, with a real time given on the call.

Two things make this corridor awkward. One is the naming. A driver who says they are on the A1 near Welwyn Garden City is on a motorway, and a driver who says the same near St Neots is not, and the safe advice differs between them. The other is the traffic. The Hertfordshire section fills from Hatfield through to Baldock morning and evening, with lorries running nose to tail in the inside lane, so a car stopped anywhere near the running lanes is a real hazard rather than an inconvenience.
