Puncture Repair in the A1(M) Corridor
Most punctures we are called to along the A1(M) began as an ordinary screw or nail, and in a car park in Hatfield they would be a twenty minute repair.
Mobile puncture repair across the A1(M) Corridor
The rules themselves do not change for a motorway. A repair is permitted only inside the central three quarters of the tread, done from the inside with the tyre off the rim, to British Standard BS AU 159 and DVSA compliant. Nothing in the shoulder or the sidewall can be saved, because that part of the tyre flexes with every rotation. A tyre run flat, even briefly at speed, breaks up its inner liner until there is no sound surface for a patch to key into.
So the useful thing is to stop early and stop safely. On the A1(M) that means ringing 999, or National Highways on 0300 123 5000, before you ring us, then getting everybody out on the passenger side and behind the barrier while they clear the lane. We come once the car is somewhere we can legally work, and we take the tyre off the wheel and show you what is actually in there before anything is decided.
Leave at the next exit if the car still moves safely. If it does not, ring 999, or National Highways on 0300 123 5000, before you ring us. On a smart motorway there is often no hard shoulder, only emergency areas, and only they can close a lane. Get everyone out through the nearside doors and behind the barrier, and do not sit in the car. We are not permitted to work on a live carriageway or a hard shoulder and we will not pretend otherwise. We come to you once you are at a service area, on a slip road, at the next junction, in a lay-by off the carriageway, or at home after recovery.

Local knowledge across the A1(M) Corridor
Hatfield is where a good many of this corridor's punctures are finally noticed, usually a mile or two after the damage was actually done. The distance matters more than the nail: the same screw is a routine repair in a car park and scrap after several miles at speed. Put air in it if it will take air, get off the road properly, and we will take the tyre off the rim and show you what is really there.

A nail found after the Hatfield tunnel
A pressure warning appeared shortly after the Hatfield tunnel. The driver came off at the next exit and rang from a car park. The nail sat squarely in the central tread and had been in for minutes rather than miles, so it was plugged, patched and balanced.
The pressure light that cleared itself
A warning came on at speed and went out again after a stop for fuel, which reads as good news and rarely is. Warm air raises pressure enough to hide a small leak. Off the rim there was a screw in the tread and a repair still well worth doing.
Enough air to reach junction 3
A slow puncture was topped up from a compressor, which bought enough pressure to leave the motorway at junction 3 rather than sit beside it. That short careful drive is what saved the tyre, because the casing never had to run flat.

Puncture Repair in the A1(M) Corridor, FAQs
It is the miles driven after the tyre lost pressure rather than the puncture itself. At seventy a soft tyre flexes far more than it was built for, and the inner liner starts to break up, so there is nothing sound left for a patch to bond to. The same nail found in a car park is usually a straightforward repair.
Keep the car straight, come off the power gently rather than braking hard, and carry on out of the tunnel if it will still steer. Stop where there is somewhere to stand clear of traffic, then ring 999 or National Highways on 0300 123 5000 before you ring us. Nobody, ourselves included, should be working on a car in a running lane.
Often, yes, provided it still holds enough to move slowly and you are only going as far as somewhere safe. Pressure is what stops the sidewall folding, so a short run with air in it does far less harm than the same distance flat. If it will not hold air at all, leave the car and wait behind the barrier.
No. Air warms as the tyre works and the pressure rises with it, which is enough to put a borderline warning out without anything having been fixed. It will be down again by morning. Treat a light that comes and goes as a leak nobody has found yet, and have the tyre looked at properly.
Very possibly, and it is worth asking rather than binning it. We can look at the wheel where it sits in the boot, take the tyre off the rim and tell you whether the damage falls inside the repairable zone. If it does, it goes back on the car properly repaired instead of being replaced for the sake of it.
