A pinch split on the inside of the casing, where the tyre was crushed against the rim edge. It leaves a short line or a bruise visible only from within, which is why the tyre comes off the rim. We check the wheel edge for a flat spot at the same time.
Both turn up, and they need opposite answers, which is the problem. A nail in the central three quarters repairs permanently. An impact split does not repair at all. Guessing from outside is how people end up driving on a tyre that was never going to hold.

A new rubber valve goes in whenever a tyre is replaced, because they perish and it is the cheapest part of the job to get wrong. On a car with pressure sensors the valve is part of the sensor, so we service the seal and grommet instead and check it holds.
