The two faults are almost never connected. A bulge is impact damage. A pothole or a kerb has trapped the sidewall between the rim and a hard edge and snapped the cords inside it, and the air is now pushing against rubber alone. It may have happened weeks before the nail turned up. What matters is that a puncture job is the only occasion on which most tyres come off the car, which is why this is where such things get found.

Impact damage needs no drama. A pothole taken at thirty with a hard edge to it will do it, and so will a kerb met at an angle while parking. Nothing lurches and nothing sounds broken, because what breaks is a few cords inside a wall you cannot see.
Not because of this. A bulge is one impact rather than wear, so its pair has no particular reason to be affected. What we will do is compare tread depths across that axle, because a new tyre beside one near the legal minimum brakes unevenly in the wet.
