Puncture Repair in the M1 Corridor

Whether a motorway puncture can be repaired is decided mostly by what happened after you picked it up, not by the nail itself. A screw in the middle of the tread is a straightforward repair.

The rules are not ours. A repair has to sit within the central three quarters of the tread and be carried out to British Standard BS AU 159, from the inside, with the tyre off the rim. Anything in the shoulder or the sidewall flexes too much to hold a patch. And a tyre that has been driven on flat has had its inner liner broken up, so there is nothing sound left to bond to, whatever the outside looks like.

That is why coming off at the first junction matters so much here. If the car still moves safely, leave the carriageway with the hazards on. If you are on the motorway itself, ring 999, or National Highways on 0300 123 5000, before you ring us, get everyone out through the nearside doors and behind the barrier, and let them make the scene safe. We come once the car is somewhere we can legally and safely work, and never onto the carriageway itself.

If you are on the motorway right now

Leave at the next exit if the car still moves safely. If it does not, ring 999, or National Highways on 0300 123 5000, before you ring us. On a smart motorway there is often no hard shoulder, only emergency areas, and only they can close a lane. Get everyone out through the nearside doors and behind the barrier, and do not sit in the car. We are not permitted to work on a live carriageway or a hard shoulder and we will not pretend otherwise. We come to you once you are at a service area, on a slip road, at the next junction, in a lay-by off the carriageway, or at home after recovery.

Local knowledge across the M1 Corridor

The difference between a repair and a new tyre on this corridor is usually distance, not damage. A screw picked up near Dunstable and caught at the next exit is an ordinary repair; the same screw carried on as far as Harpenden rarely is. Get the car off the road, ring us, and we will take the tyre off the rim and show you what is actually inside it before anything is decided.

Puncture Repair call-outs we handle in the M1 Corridor

Twelve miles too far past Harpenden

A driver saw the pressure warning near Harpenden and pressed on rather than coming off at J10. By the time we had the tyre off the rim the inner liner had broken up along the whole shoulder. The original screw would have been a twenty minute repair.

Why Dunstable got a new tyre instead

A nail had gone in where the tread blocks meet the sidewall. It was holding air and would probably have gone on doing so, but a patch there works loose sooner or later and the standard does not permit it, so we fitted a replacement.

The Shefford tyre we could legally save

A car parked up at Shefford had a bolt sitting squarely in the middle of the tread and had done barely a mile on it. Off the rim, cleaned, plugged and patched from the inside, wheel balanced, back on the car and no new tyre needed.

Puncture Repair in the M1 Corridor, FAQs

More often than anything else you can do. Every mile run on a deflating tyre grinds the inner liner further and moves the job from a repair to a replacement. If the car will still steer properly and the exit is close, take it, get somewhere off the road and stop there rather than pressing on for a garage.

Because of speed rather than the damage. On a town road you feel a tyre going soft within a few hundred yards. At seventy the car often feels normal until the warning light appears, and by then several miles have gone by. The puncture is the same one, the tyre underneath it no longer is.

Debris drifts to the nearside and stays there. Screws, staples and offcuts off trade traffic sit in the left hand lane and in the gutter, so that is the wheel that finds them. They usually go in cleanly and leak slowly, which is the best sort to get, because a slow leak caught early is very often repairable.

There is no need to have it taken apart again, but it is worth including in a monthly pressure check. A properly done internal repair is permanent and the tyre goes back to full service, motorway speed included. If it starts losing pressure again, that points at something new rather than at the old repair failing.

The repair itself is identical, but the odds are far better. A tyre that went down overnight while the car stood still has not been run flat, so the liner is intact and there is a sound surface to work on. That is the same injury that would have been scrap had you carried it on at seventy.
