The repairable area on a car tyre stops well short of where most people assume it does. It is the central three quarters of the tread width, and the reason has nothing to do with caution. It is about how much that part of the tyre moves.
The centre of the tread runs almost flat against the road. It carries load but barely changes shape, so a patch bonded to the liner beneath it lives a quiet life. The shoulder is a different object entirely. It is where the tread curves round towards the sidewall, where the edge of the steel belt finishes, and where every corner, every camber and every kerb makes the rubber bend and spring back. A patch there is being peeled at its edge thousands of times a mile.
It does not fail immediately, which is the trap. It holds for a few hundred miles, then weeps air at one corner of the patch, and by the time the tyre is opened again the liner around it has been fretted rough. That is why we would rather refuse a shoulder repair today than sell you the same tyre twice.
