Which punctures can be repaired at the roadside?
A puncture can be repaired when the damage falls inside the central three-quarters of the tread width and the tyre has not been structurally weakened. That is the rule set out in British Standard BS AU 159, and it applies wherever the work happens. Outside that band the tyre flexes too much for any repair to survive.
Picture the tread face split into four equal strips across its width. The two middle strips are repairable territory. The outer strips, the shoulders where the tread curves over, and the whole sidewall are not. A fitter marks the object, breaks the bead, and inspects the inside of the tyre before committing to anything, because the entry point on the outside can be misleading about the damage within.
