A flat tyre in an electric car follows a different script from a petrol one, and the differences all point the same way: fewer options at the roadside. There is usually no spare, the sealant kit has a narrow range of use, and the car often cannot simply be hooked up and towed. None of that is a fault, but it is worth understanding before you are standing next to it.

What do you do with a flat tyre in an EV?

Get somewhere safe, establish whether the damage is in the tread or the sidewall, and then get a tyre brought to the car rather than trying to get the car to a tyre. That last part matters more for an EV than for anything else on the road, because the recovery step is the awkward one.

If you are on a motorway, safety comes first and the Highway Code's breakdown rules apply exactly as they would to any other vehicle: leave the carriageway if you can, exit by the left-hand doors and wait behind the barrier. Why do electric cars not carry a spare?

Space and weight. The battery pack occupies the floor of most EVs, and the space a spare wheel would sit in is frequently taken by the pack, the charging cables or additional luggage volume. Manufacturers also watch weight closely, because mass costs range, and a full-size spare is a meaningful lump of it.

The result is that most EVs leave the factory with a sealant kit and a compressor rather than a wheel. That is fine until the damage is the kind sealant cannot touch.

Will the sealant kit actually work?

Only for a small puncture in the tread. Sealant is pumped in, the tyre is reinflated and the compound is drawn into the hole as the wheel turns. It is a get-you-moving measure, not a repair.

It will not seal a sidewall cut, a bulge, a shoulder injury or a tyre that has already been driven on flat. That is not a limitation of the product so much as physics: the sidewall flexes on every rotation and nothing poured into the tyre survives it. The BTMA guidance on BS AU 159 restricts even proper repairs to the central portion of the tread, which tells you where the boundary sits. Note: sealant coats the inside of the tyre and the pressure sensor. Tell whoever fits the replacement that you have used it, so the sensor gets cleaned or checked rather than quietly failing later.

Why is recovering an EV more awkward?

Most electric cars should be recovered on a flatbed rather than towed with any driven wheel turning on the road. A turning driven wheel spins the motor, which can generate current the car is not expecting to handle when it is shut down, and manufacturers commonly prohibit conventional towing for that reason. Many EVs also have no true mechanical neutral in the sense a towing operator would want.

Check your own handbook, because this varies by model and it is the manufacturer's instruction that governs. The practical upshot is the same either way: recovery for an EV usually means waiting for a flatbed, which is a slower and scarcer resource than a standard patrol van.

That is precisely why bringing the tyre to the car is worth more for an electric vehicle than for anything else. It removes the recovery step from the problem entirely.

Do EV tyres fail differently?

They wear differently, which changes how often you end up in this situation. Electric cars are heavier than equivalent petrol models because of the battery, and they deliver torque instantly, both of which load the tyre harder. Many are fitted with tyres specified for the extra load, sometimes with noise-reducing foam inside.
