Every so often we take a tyre off for a puncture that is not one. A nail has gone into the tread, sometimes an impressively long one, and it has stopped inside the rubber without reaching the inner liner. The tyre has never lost a pound of pressure and never would. What brought us out was that somebody saw a nail head in the tread and quite reasonably assumed the worst.
The right thing to do with one of those is genuinely nothing, and it takes taking the tyre off to establish it. If the object has not gone through, it comes out, the shallow hole is checked and the tyre goes back on. Leaving a nail sitting in the tread is not a good long-term plan either, because it works its way deeper and lets water into the belt underneath, so it is worth dealing with. It is simply not the emergency it looked like.
