What to do in the first five minutes
Get the car as far off the carriageway as you safely can and put the hazards on. If you are on a fast road, get everyone out on the side away from traffic and stand behind a barrier if there is one, rather than sitting in the car. Then call.
Do not drive on it to reach somewhere better lit or busier. That instinct is understandable and it is the most expensive decision available: a few hundred metres on a flat destroys the sidewall from the inside and turns a repairable puncture into a new tyre.
